Warriors It's Time to Unveil the Plastic Chemicals in Your Everyday Meals
When you enjoy a seemingly simple meal, like a can of Annie's Organic Cheesy Ravioli or if you're choosing Chipotle chicken burrito, you're likely unaware of the unwanted ingredients lurking within—plastic chemicals. A recent Consumer Reports study highlights the pervasive presence of plasticizers, particularly phthalates, across a range of foods, from supermarket staples to fast food favorites.
What Are Plasticizers?
Plasticizers, such as phthalates and bisphenols (including BPA), are chemicals used to make plastics more flexible and durable. Unfortunately, these substances also find their way into food through various stages of production and packaging. Phthalates are particularly notorious, known for their role as endocrine disruptors, interfering with hormone function and posing risks to health issues like obesity, diabetes, and reproductive disorders.
The Findings: A Closer Look at Common Foods
Consumer Reports' testing of nearly 100 food products revealed widespread contamination, regardless of packaging type or food category. Shockingly, products labeled as 'organic', often perceived as healthier, were not spared. For instance, Annie’s Organic Cheesy Ravioli contained almost five times more phthalates than Chef Boyardee Beefaroni, challenging the notion that organic products are free from such contaminants.
The Wider Impact and What Can Be Done
Despite the alarming presence of these chemicals, regulation remains lax. Current safety thresholds for phthalates and bisphenols in food are based on outdated science and may not adequately protect public health. Consumer Reports advocates for stricter regulations and testing by food manufacturers to reduce plasticizer levels. Moreover, there is a growing need for advancements in green chemistry to develop safer, sustainable materials.
Protecting Yourself and Your Family
While complete avoidance of these chemicals is challenging due to their ubiquitous nature, there are steps you can take to minimize exposure:
- Choose Fresh and Whole Foods: Limit consumption of processed foods where possible.
- Be Mindful of Packaging: Opt for foods packaged in glass or other non-plastic materials.
- Stay Informed: Follow the latest research and guidelines on food safety concerning plastic chemicals.
The Power of Informed Choices
As the food industry and regulators work towards safer practices, consumer awareness and advocacy play crucial roles in driving change. By understanding the risks and making informed choices, you can help protect your health and push for greater transparency and safety in the food industry.
As we uncover more about the ubiquitous presence of plastic chemicals in our food, it becomes increasingly clear that making informed choices is more than a personal preference, it's a true necessity for our health. The findings from the Consumer Reports study are a stark reminder of the pervasive nature of these harmful substances in everything from fast foods to organic staples.
This awareness should empower us to #BoycottKelloggs and other brands that fall short of ensuring the safety and integrity of their products. By voting with our wallets, we are not just refusing to support practices that endanger our health, but also advocating for systemic changes that promote transparency and consumer safety in the food industry.
It's time to stand united in demanding better standards from food manufacturers. Remember, every purchase is a vote for the kind of world we want to live in. Let's make those votes count for our health and for future generations.

I am blown away by some of the brands on here that I deemed safe. This goes to show you that we truly can’t trust the labeling being put out and we have to rely on our own research to deem it unsafe. Happy baby surprised me the most ! I also noticed that one of the jars for baby food that has the most was in a glass container 😮. I don’t feed those to my baby anyway , although I’ve been given them – I thought being it was in glass it would be safe. I think the safer option from here is just choosing more healthy and natural products. Oh how I wish I learned more about this earlier in life rather than having to undo all the things that I perceived to be or taste “good”. When in fact I’ve been being handed toxins covered in gold 😭😭
